This is the second big debut of a global music streaming giant in India after Swedish platform Spotify made its way into the country late last month.
The ad-supported version of music app from YouTube is free and to get access to ad-free YouTube Premium, you have to pay Rs 99 a month, the company said in a statement.
“It’s interesting to note how Indian artists have consistently claimed top spots over the last few months in the ‘Global YouTube Top Artists’ chart.
“With YouTube app for Music, we are hoping to bring the best in global and Indian music to millions of fans across India, and give them an immersive music experience,” said Lyor Cohen, Global Head of Music, YouTube.
The company also announced to bring “YouTube Premium” to India which would be available for Rs 129 a month that included membership to YouTube Premium, offline downloads and access to all YouTube originals.
“Samsung Galaxy S10 users can enjoy four months of free, ad-free access to YouTube Premium,” said the company.
The new Music app from Youtube would throw a big competition to services like Gaana, Saavn, Apple Music and Amazon Music.
In the crowded Indian music streaming industry, the newly-launched Spotify has already garnered over one million users.
According to a recent report by Deloitte and Indian music-industry body IMI, the audio and video OTT market in India is valued at around $280 million. The evolving audio OTT market provides nearly 150 million monthly active users access to millions of soundtracks across platforms.
Know More About Youtube Music
This is a music streaming service developed by YouTube; it provides a tailored interface for the service oriented towards music streaming, allowing users to browse through music videos on YouTube based on genres, playlists, and recommendations. The service also offers a premium tier, which enables ad-free playback, audio-only background playback, and downloading songs for offline playback. These subscription benefits are also offered to subscribers of Google Play Music and YouTube Premium. The app is available in 31 countries.
The app allows users to browse and stream all music-oriented videos on YouTube. The availability of music includes many of the releases from mainstream artists and extends to any video categorized as music on the YouTube service. Songs play via their music videos where applicable. YouTube Premium subscribers are able to switch to an audio-only mode that can play in the background while the application is not in use.
The music app from Youtube will initially operate in parallel with Google Play Music, but product manager Elias Roman stated that Google Play Music users will eventually be migrated to YouTube app after it reaches feature parity (including the addition of features such as music purchases and a cloud-based library for user-provided music). Product manager T. Jay Fowler stated that collections, playlists and preferences would be migrated.
