Village Rockstars is Inda's official entry for Oscar 2019Assamese film Village Rockstars is Inda’s official entry for Oscar 2019 in the Foreign Language Film category.

Out of the 28 movies in contention – including ‘Padmaavat’, ‘Raazi’ and ‘Love Sonia’ among others – the selection committee of the Film Federation of India (FFI) chose the Rima Das-directorial.

The announcement was made by Kannada filmmaker Rajendra Singh Babu, the Head of the Committee, here on Saturday.

“The decision was made unanimously by the jury to send ‘Village Rockstars’ – the film which also won the National Award for Best Feature Film this year – to represent India at the Academy Awards,” he told ANI.

The film traces the story of Dhunu, a girl from a village in Assam, who dreams of owning a guitar and forming a rock band.

Village Rockstars is the story of a young village girl in northeast India wants to start her own rock band.

This movie has been co-produced and directed by Rima Das who is a self-taught filmmaker. This movie was made in four years and was shot on a simple handheld camera. Village rockstars used a cast of non-actors who basically belong from the village of Kalardiya, which is the hometown of Rima Das.

A big moment for Assamese Film Industry

Reacting on the news that Village Rockstar is Inda’s official entry for Oscar 2019, Rima Das said, “It is a big deal because when you don’t receive recognition, you feel things are not possible. It stops people from trying. Such news makes me feel that things are possible.”
